Best Ever Seasonal Allergy Remedy

Spring has sprung!

And along with warmer days, blooming flowers, and fuller trees comes allergy season!

Almost everyone I talk to suffers in some way from allergies. I walked into my local Costco and the very first thing I was presented with was a GIANT row of allergy medication options.

When you have allergy symptoms like fatigue, itchy/watery eyes, sinus issues, coughing/wheezing, headaches, brain fog, itchy skin, and more then you want sweet sweet relief! But these allergy medications do come with side effects that we should talk about.

The most common form of allergy medication comes in the form of an antihistamine. Histamine is an immune response that is released from your body in the presence of a threat from an allergen. It causes your blood vessels to swell and dilate, which can cause allergy symptoms.

There are short-term side effects that many people feel pretty immediately when taking these medications. The most common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness

  • Dizziness

  • Agitation

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Vision problems

  • Dry mouth/eyes

  • Constipation

  • Insomnia

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Low blood pressure

  • Mucous thickening in airways

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Abdominal pain

  • Nausea/vomiting

  • Joint Pain

  • Breast swelling/tenderness

And those are just the common ones.

What about long term side effects? Many people who suffer from allergies tend to suffer YEAR LONG, not just during the Springtime.

This leads people to take allergy medication on a regular basis, which presents a whole host of other potential side effects.

If your allergy med also happens to have a decongestant in it, then this can lead to high blood pressure. Research has shown that some types of antihistamines have been linked with dementia and cognitive decline. Some can cause acute liver problems.

Fun stuff huh?

Now, let’s get into what you came for-the best ever allergy remedy!

From a functional health standpoint, seasonal allergies have been linked to compromised gut health.

Yep, we are back to good old gut health!

You see, your gut, lungs, and nasal passages are all covered in a mucosal lining. If the mucosal lining of your gut is irritated due to a bacterial imbalance or damage then this causes inflammation. The inflammation of your gut mucosal lining can also influence the rest of your mucosal lining that covers your lungs and nasal passages.

Since the majority of your immune system is made in your gut, it profoundly affects your entire body’s immune response-including histamine and allergic responses. Lack of healthy gut bacteria has been linked to all types of allergies.

When your immune system is on overdrive because it’s dealing with compromised gut health, it’s definitely going to act up when pollen enters through your nasal passages and respiratory system.

So how do we fix this?!

It’s all about optimizing and healing your gut health. This is what I do every day all day in my practice with clients and it works wonders. Allergy meds are one of the first medications I see my clients kick to the curb after doing some serious gut healing.

And what’s my process? It comes down to the 3 R’s of gut healing:

  1. Remove inflammatory foods and pathogens

  2. Repair digestive function and leaky gut

  3. Reinoculate with beneficial bacteria

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, I bet that’s not the only thing you’ve got going on with your health.
